Inequality and Beyond GDP
The multi-dimensional nature of inequality needs to be reflected in the way it is measured and addressed.
A great deal of work over the last ten years has been carried out to measure the progress of our societies going "Beyond GDP".
Enrico Giovannini from the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" discusses possible frameworks to measure equitable and sustainable well-being and opportunities to develop policies to reduce inequality.
He claims that alternative measures or progress, beyond GDP, must receive the dedicated attention of the United Nations, international financial institutions, the scientific community and public institutions.
These metrics must be squarely focused on measuring social progress, human well-being, justice, security, equality and sustainability. On this account, he examines how new indicators, such as "subjective well-being" measures, have been recently developed to better integrate economic, social and environmental policies. In the meantime, income inequality has grown in both developed and developing countries.
