Mariana has joined the Department of Geography and Spatial Planning as a Research Specialist. Her work will contribute to the University of Luxembourg's role as contractor of the Vienna-based European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) which provides independent, evidence-based advice to EU and national decision makers, in topics of discrimination, access to justice, racism & xenophobia, data protection, victims’ rights, and children's rights. Mariana will contribute, amongst others, to examining how the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union is being used by Luxembourg decision makers, academia, civil society and legal practitioners in designing policies and laws, to assist FRA in strengthening its support to member states.
Mariana graduated Political Science and International Relations from the Universidade de Brasilia, Brazil (1996), and holds a masters degree in European Political and Administrative Studies from the College of Europe, Bruges, Belgium (2001) and a masters degree in Management at Bocconi School of Management, Milan, Italy (2019).
Over the last 20 years she has been a human rights practitioner holding positions with the European Commission, International Organization for Migration in Brussels, Belgium, and with UNICEF. With UNICEF she worked for 18 years in Peru, Nepal, Mozambique, Ethiopia, India, and headquarters in New York, assuming leadership positions in Peru and Nepal. Mariana is a national of Finland and Luxembourg.
